What to Know About the Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird in Uganda?

The Yellow-Fronted Tinkerbird in Uganda is one of the African birds in Uganda seen during Uganda birding safaris & Tours. Formerly called the yellow-fronted tinker barbet is a small-sized African barbet (11cm) in length.

It resembles passerine birds and also have bristles at the base of the bill and live in tropical areas. They belong to the same species with the red-fronted tinkerbird.

How Does the Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird in Uganda Look Like?

The yellow-fronted tinkerbird is a beautiful bird with a short neck, relatively big head, and a shorter tail.

The upperparts of an adult yellow-fronted tinkerbirds are dark and very striped with yellow and white.

The head has as strong black and white pattern while the forecrown spot is yellow. The downer plumage is lemon yellow, male and female are similar.

Juveniles have a dark crown with no yellow spot. For keen birders who wish to do birding in Uganda, the yellow fronted tinkerbird would require one to have binoculars for easy identification from other tinkerbirds.

Like other tinkerbirds, the yellow-fronted tinkerbird feeds mainly on mistletoe fruits. The fruit is swallowed as a whole, and later the fruit stones are regurgitated. This bird is a mistletoe disperser agent.

The male yellow-fronted tinkerbird and his wife dig at least 10cm hole into a dead tree branch. They are at times replaced by the Acacia pied barbet, the expands and uses the nest.

How Does the Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird in Uganda Reproduce?

Females lay between 2-4eggs. Egg-laying season is from July-February, the eggs are incubated by both eggs until hatching.  Both parents take care of the chicks calling them for food persistently.
