What to Know About the African Stonechat in Uganda?
The African Stonechat in Uganda is one of the African Uganda birds seen during Uganda birding tours. Also called the common stonechat, the It is a species of the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae, commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa like Uganda and other adjacent areas.
Similar to other chats, the African stone chart is allocated to the thrush family Turdidae, to which the chats are convergent.
The scientific name relate to its outlook and habitat and means “collared rock-dweller”: Saxicola from Latin saxum “rock” + incola “one who dwells in a place”, torquatus, Latin for “collared”.
How Does the African Stonechat in Uganda look like?
The head of the male is black, the half-collar and rump are white, back and tail are black, and the black wings have a white patch on the top side of the innermost wing.
The upper breast is dark orange-red, but gradually changes to white to white or pale orange on the lower breast and belly reliant on subspecies.
Their plumage is fairly grayer and stripy outside the breeding season.
