This species is a resident in the natural subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda.
Mostly while birding in Uganda, the white-tailed ant-thrush is commonly found in the natural Kibale forest National Park.
