5 Days Uganda Birding Safari – Overview

The 5 Days Uganda Birding Safari (Uganda birdwatching tour) takes you birding in Uganda near the Kampala areas of Entebbe, Mabamba Swamp, and Lake Mburo National Park.

This 5 Days Uganda birding safari in Uganda commences with the encounter of Entebbe Botanical Gardens and Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) and along the shore of Lake Victoria before proceeding for other encounters in Mabamba Swamp well known for its water dweller birds like the rare shoe bill stork and eventually Lake Mburo National Park with its 350 species of birds that thrive in its Savannah landscapes.

Day 1: Encounter birds in UWEC shores of Lake Victoria and Botanical Gardens.
Day 2: Bird Mabamba swamp
Day 3: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
Day 4: Encounter birds in Lake Mburo National Park.
Day 5: Transfer back to Kampala.

Day 1: Encounter Birds in UWEC Shores of Lake Victoria and Botanical Gardens. 

Embark on this activity after breakfast and have an encounter in UWEC, Botanical Gardens, and the shores of Lake Victoria.

You have opportunities of spotting about 170 bird species of which there are 10 species of weavers like the rare:-

– Northern Masked Weaver
– African paradise
– Golden Backed
– Baglafect Grosbeak
– Black Necked and Northern Brown Throated;

5 fly catcher species like;
– Red bellied
– Lead colored
– crested shrike flycatcher
– Swamp flycatcher among others.

Species of Raptors like;
– Gabar Goshawk
– Shikra
– small banded snake Eagle
– African Goshawk
– African Hobby and African Fish Eagle among other birds.

Retire for overnight.

Day 2: Birds At Mabamba Swamp

After an early breakfast, embark on the transfer to Mabamba swamp for a memorable birding encounter. The canoe ride on Mabamba water-logged area will expose you to magnificent flora and counts of birds that enjoy the naturally given food of snails and other water organisms. The rare shoebill stork is the major spot of the day while other species like;-

Squacco, Long Toed Plover, African Water Rail, Goliath, Purple, Pygmy Goose, Herons, Yellow Billed Duck, Grey, and Black Headed Heron, White Faced Whistling Duck, Moorhen, Black Crake, Allen’s Gallinule, and African Jacana may be spotted in the area.

The wildlife like elusive Sitatunga Antelope can also be spotted. The en-route stops in the swamps along the road might expose you to Papyrus Gonolek, Yellow Crowned Bishop; White winged Warbler, and Weyns Weaver among other species.

Accommodation: You will have dinner and Overnight at your previous lodge.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

The encounter starts early in the morning after breakfast heading to the southwest of Uganda 240km approximately 3 – 4 hours’ drive from Kampala.

You have chances of spotting birds en route including the Wolly-Necked Stork, Ruffaous Bellied Heron, and Lilac Breasted Roller among other species.

The stop at the equator allows you to encounter the water experiments that justify the geographical divide between the south and northern hemispheres and impressive photo shooting.

Continue on the drive to Lake Mburo National Park arriving early for lunch. In the evening, you will embark on the birding encounter within the Rwonyo environs before retiring overnight.

Day 4: Encounter Birds in Lake Mburo National Park

After an early morning breakfast, embark on the full-day search for birds in the savannah landscapes of Lake Mburo National Park.

Explore the park on foot following the respective trails in the company of an armed ranger to save you from attacks of wild animals. Explore the Miriti and Warukiri swamps, the Rubanga forest, and the salt lick.

Accommodation: You will spend an overnight at your previous lodge

Day 5: Transfer Back to Kampala

After an early morning breakfast, take a bird walk in the park to encounter some of the birds that you might have missed on the previous days or have another encounter with the birds that were spotted on the previous walk.

After this short walk, you will transfer back to Kampala.
